Volunteer Opportunities with the Ten Oaks Project
May 4th
Over the past month I have been providing information on some volunteer opportunities with the Ten Oaks Project – which is a group that has ties to former discussion group participants (and members of GLOW/Federation of Students). There is another opportunity available – they are looking for people who would be interested in offering workshops at a Leadership Retreat ! There is a particular need for workshops in grant writing and digital video editing. You can find out more information by visiting:

and can direct any messages to: projectacorn@tenoaksproject.org.
Upcoming Event and Volunteer Opportunities!
Apr 23rd
At this week’s meeting, I promised to post information about an event this weekend and an exciting volunteer opportunity.
ManJam Oral Dicktation: A celebration of gay men’s art and culture is being held this Sunday Afternoon (April 25th). For more information, check out www.manjam.ca.
Some former discussion attendees are involved in the Ten Oaks Project, “a charitable, volunteer-driven organization that engages and connects children and youth from LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer) communities.” (http://www.tenoaksproject.org/about-us.aspx). They are looking for volunteers to help with a Summer Camp in July. You can find out more by visiting http://www.tenoaksproject.org/about-us.aspx.
Community Member Looking For Assistance with Research Project
Feb 24th
The WNDG was contacted by an individual who is conducting research related to “What are the “rules” for dating, relationships, and sexuality as gay men?”. This research has been approved by the appropriate University of Guelph and University of Waterloo ethics procedures and I offered to pass along the information on the researcher’s behalf. Details below:
“We are looking for gay men to share their thoughts about the “rules” for dating, relationships and sexuality in a 1.5 to 2 hour focus group discussion. Focus groups of approximately eight gay men will be held on the University of Waterloo campus. Pizza and pop will be served. All participants will be entered into a draw for $100 Visa Gift!
For more information, and to participate in a focus group, email Dr. Robin Milhausen at rmilhaus@uoguelph.ca or call 824-4120 ext. 54397.
The information gathered from the focus groups shall be used in an Undergraduate University of Guelph Honour’s project. This project was reviewed, and received ethics clearance through the Research Ethics Board at the University of Guelph and the Office of Research Ethics at the University of Waterloo.”
GSA Sponsorship for the WNDG?
Jan 3rd
The UW Grad Student Association has expressed an interest in sponsoring the WNDG! All that is required for official sponsorship is a list of five Graduate Students who regularly attend the WNDG and would be willing to put forward the appropriate paperwork for sponsorship.
As participation in the WNDG is confidential, we do not have any means of tracking which of our regular participants are UW Graduate Students. If you are a UW Graduate Student and willing to work with the WNDG Facilitator and the GSA to arrange sponsorship, please get in touch with the facilitator as your earliest convenience.
Volunteer Opportunities!
Jan 3rd
With the expansion of the online presence and the starting of the WNDG E-mail List (See Staying in Touch for more information) there are some opportunities for people to get more actively involved with the WNDG:
- Weekly Announcements Volunteer: Every week, participants in the WNDG share information about upcoming events in the local area that they believe participants might be interested in. The Weekly Announcements Volunteers record the announcements and send them out to the WNDG E-mail List after the discussions. These volunteers will help people stay connected to the WNDG – even if classes or other commitments keep them from regularly attending the group.
- WNDG E-mail List Moderator: Once the new e-mail list gets up and running, individuals will be requesting permission to be added to the list. Some assistance in managing the e-mail list subscriptions would be most appreciated.
- Facilitators: Of course, there is always a need for individuals to help facilitate the discussions.
If you are interested in assisting in any of the above roles, feel free to speak with the WNDG Facilitator after the discussion or e-mail wndg-owner<at>lists.uwaterloo.ca.
