Training for all parties interested in volunteering for the Wednesday Night Discussion Group will be held this Saturday (January 28th) between Noon and 4:00 pm. The exact times for training will be dependent on the number of parties interested in being trained and the specific positions that people are interested in volunteering for.

More details to come…

Voting is important… including voting for your pick of WNDG topics!

Take advantage of your opportunity to influence WNDG topics for next term (May to August). A survey is now available to solicit your suggestions for the topics next term. You can find the survey by visiting:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dGxhLVF5VGNxMGg1eDZYeE1FbWdFZEE6MA#gid=0

The survey will also ask whether or not you would support piloting a new facilitation style for the fifth Wednesday of each month. Information on the Community-Building Through Dialog Circles facilitation style is provided in the survey.

Be sure to place your vote ASAP so that we can set the schedule of topics starting next week.

Another reason to consider joining the WNDG E-mail List!

Can’t attend the a WNDG but want to keep up to date on community announcements?

Thanks to efforts of our new volunteers, weekly posts of announcements from the discussions will be sent out to our  e-mail list (and included on a special section of our website as well).

To join the e-mail list, visit https://lists.uwaterloo.ca/mailman/listinfo/wndg.

Also, be sure to check out the webpage for some new features (we will send a more formal post once the site is fully updated!).

Thanks to our volunteers for all of their efforts!

Anniversary and Volunteer Opportunites!

It is amazing how quickly a year flies by! It was almost one year ago that the Wednesday Night Discussion Group changed to its new organization and format (see the History page on www.wndg.ca for more information). I have been very encouraged by both the continued support for the WNDG from all of our sponsors & participants and the often lively and well-attended discussions that I have had the privilege of facilitating each week.

As the “new” WNDG moves into its second year, my main goal will be working toward ensuring that the group is sustainable moving forward. As the sole facilitator and volunteer, I am always nervous that changes in my own personal life, attempts to schedule vacations or the occasional bout of illness will impact the group and its participants. As such, over the next year, I would like to spend some time expanding the base of volunteers supporting the WNDG- especially in the following three areas:

  • Expanding and diversifying the team of facilitators for the group;
  • Managing and revitalizing of the WNDG Discussion Group Listserve; and
  • Updating of the WNDG.ca Website.

If you are interested in and available to help out in any of these areas, please let me know at the discusssion or via e-mail (See the Keeping in Touch Tab for more information). I will be scheduling training sessions for all roles in late September and early October!

Thanks again for all of your support over the past year!

Volunteer Opportunities with the Ten Oaks Project

Over the past month I have been providing information on some volunteer opportunities with the Ten Oaks Project – which is a group that has ties to former discussion group participants (and members of GLOW/Federation of Students). There is another opportunity available – they are looking for people who would be interested in offering workshops at a Leadership Retreat ! There is a particular need for workshops in grant writing and digital video editing. You can find out more information by visiting:

http://www.tenoaksproject.org/what-we-do/project-acorn/deliver-a-workshop-at-project-acorn.aspx

and can direct any messages to: projectacorn@tenoaksproject.org.

Upcoming Event and Volunteer Opportunities!

At this week’s meeting, I promised to post information about an event this weekend and an exciting volunteer opportunity.

ManJam Oral Dicktation: A celebration of gay men’s art and culture is being held this Sunday Afternoon (April 25th). For more information, check out www.manjam.ca.

Some former discussion attendees are involved in the Ten Oaks Project, “a charitable, volunteer-driven organization that engages and connects children and youth from LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer) communities.” (http://www.tenoaksproject.org/about-us.aspx). They are looking for volunteers to help with a Summer Camp in July. You can find out more by visiting http://www.tenoaksproject.org/about-us.aspx.

Community Member Looking For Assistance with Research Project

The WNDG was contacted by an individual who is conducting research related to “What are the “rules” for dating, relationships, and sexuality as gay men?”. This research has been approved by the appropriate University of Guelph and University of Waterloo ethics procedures and I offered to pass along the information on the researcher’s behalf. Details below:

“We are looking for gay men to share their thoughts about the “rules” for dating, relationships and sexuality in a 1.5 to 2 hour focus group discussion.  Focus groups of approximately eight gay men will be held on the University of Waterloo campus.  Pizza and pop will be served.  All participants will be entered into a draw for $100 Visa Gift!

For more information, and to participate in a focus group, email Dr. Robin Milhausen at rmilhaus@uoguelph.ca or call 824-4120 ext. 54397.

The information gathered from the focus groups shall be used in an Undergraduate University of Guelph Honour’s project. This project was reviewed, and received ethics clearance through the Research Ethics Board at the University of Guelph and the Office of Research Ethics at the University of Waterloo.”

GSA Sponsorship for the WNDG?

The UW Grad Student Association has expressed an interest in sponsoring the WNDG! All that is required for official sponsorship is a list of five Graduate Students who regularly attend the WNDG and would be willing to put forward the appropriate paperwork for sponsorship.

As participation in the WNDG is confidential, we do not have any means of tracking which of our regular participants are UW Graduate Students. If you are a UW Graduate Student and willing to work with the WNDG Facilitator and the GSA to arrange sponsorship, please get in touch with the facilitator as your earliest convenience.
